SC Gallery enters a new chapter with the opening of its new venue at Calle Estrauntza 7
in Bilbao. After eighteen years of activity at its venue on Calle Cortes 4, the gallery
presents “La primera mirada no era mía” (“The first glance was not mine”), a solo exhibition
by Amaya Suberviola (Mendavia, Navarre, 1993) that marks the inauguration of the new venue’s exhibition program.

In “La primera mirada no era mía”, Amaya Suberviola presents a collection of works on canvas and paper in which the process becomes as significant as the final outcome. The paintings retain the traces of their own transformations, revealing a language in constant development and a practice grounded in a continuous revision.

Regarding the process behind this exhibition, the artist notes:

“The feeling I get when working on a piece is that I am building a tool. But every day, the task that tool is meant to perform changes. In each session, I have to adapt that tool to its new function, using the materials I already have. For example, a hammer becomes a pair of pliers, the pliers become a pair of scissors, the scissors become a weighing scale.

By adding, removing, or repositioning the elements that make it up. Every day there is a new need to fulfill. Strange shapes, color combinations, and structures emerge, born from obeying old demands and adapting to new ones. Plenty of scars that betray the changes undergone during the process, like someone who has just had surgery. When I stop, it’s because something clicks. The tool manages to perform a —useless— function, the machine’s gears move and work. It is like a device that serves no practical purpose, yet

    it is effective”.
