    Grip Face

SC Gallery presents “SAUDADE 01/158”, by David Oliver aka Grip Face (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1989). This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition in this Bilbao-based art gallery.

    15/10/2021 – 02/12/2021.

For further information or catalogue feel free to contact: scgallery@scgallery.es

The artist settles again at SC Gallery, now digging deeper in his inner self. From this perspective, he conceives an exhibition where the whole gallery transforms into a perverse domestic place.

David Oliver (Grip Face) offers a space of his own where we can coexist with different pieces: a tapestry and a canvas that deform like mirrors, an intervened wall, drawings, a piece in close collaboration with the artist Ana Barriga, two sculptures, and a frame that stands out diagonally forming part of this distinctive scenery.

The evolution of David Oliver’s (Grip Face’s) language is undeniable. An example of this is the recent publication of his most personal notebook with an exquisite selection of his drawings, phrases and collages. An iconography that, along with its staging, has been refined and enriched over the years. Three of his most recurring elements (masks, walls and garbage) have been traveling and mutating with him since his “Black Faces” exhibition (SC Gallery, 2016-2017). However, have we learned anything from the situations that are lurking on us? We can cover our ears and put on as many masks as we want, but human garbage is still there.

In SAUDADE 01/158, David Oliver (Grip Face) settles again at SC Gallery, now digging deeper in his inner self. From this perspective, he conceives an exhibition where the whole gallery transforms into a perverse domestic place.

David Oliver (Grip Face) offers a space of his own where we can coexist with different pieces: a tapestry and a canvas that deform like mirrors, an intervened wall, drawings, a piece in close collaboration with the artist Ana Barriga, two sculptures, and a frame that stands out diagonally forming part of this domestic scenery. A room of one’s own, like Woolf’s, and a connected room of one’s own, like Zafra’s.

Hidden, less dark and more naked than it seems, SAUDADE 01/158 is David Oliver’s (Grip Face’s) most intimate project at a time when his artistic practice merges more than ever with his everyday life. Quite an exhibition.

With the complicity and curatorial collaboration of Jordi Pallarès, this project will be the first of an exhibition trilogy between 2021 and 2022 that if circumstances allow, will continue, in New York and will end in Seoul.
