    Iván Floro

    Exhibition dates: 17 October – 20 November 2025.

SC Gallery presents “Llámalo X” (Call it whatever), Iván Floro’s first solo exhibition in this gallery.

This exhibition brings together a collection of canvases in different formats that represent bodies charged with eroticism and unveiled intimacy, on the threshold between beauty and terror.

The offering bodies of Iván Floro (Barcelona, 1993) are displayed before our eyes emphatically: they are spaces of Metamodernity at the beginning of the 21st century, and they are as familiar, recognisable and stimulating as their undeniable artistic references, Egon Schiele and Lucien Freud. These expressionist pieces are loaded with profound evocations of the memory of the tensely pictorial Spanishness, with brushstrokes as brilliant as they are heartfelt, connecting with the dreams of depicting the soul’s most hidden desires in the manner of Goya, or simply allowing oneself to be carried away by the impression of a Tarantino film.

These offering bodies are expressions of an aesthetic taste beyond allegory, masterfully executing the nosology of this contemporary era that is articulated in binary units: inside/outside, key/door, calm/tension, tenderness/rapture. The result is an exercise in understanding exasperated or expectant bodies, before or after sex, static or dynamic, full of passion for life or frightened by the loss of the key that prevents them from returning to their original nucleus—an exercise in understanding carried out by the fertile imagination of a painter who knows how to extract feelings from the libido in proportion to beauty.

The judgement of beauty to which men and women of our time aspire emerges in these paintings as a response to a human behaviour dominated by the temperament that marks revealed eroticism and intimacy, the feeling of living through a disaster or the proximity to horror. This line of artistic creation brings him closer to what Friedrich Nietzsche once said in Twilight of the Idols: to the vain hatred of our species for everything that demeans it, old age, fatigue, illness, exhaustion, morbid manifestations; that is, to everything that pushes discomfort to the allowable limit.

In short, when assessing Iván Floro’s art, Rilke’s disturbing aphorism becomes clear: “beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror”.
